What it is

Firewise USA® is a recognition program run by the National Fire Protection Association for residential areas, roughly 8 to 2,500 dwelling units, that assess their own wildfire risk, adopt a community action plan, put local work into it, and renew that recognition every year. It is the one community measure residents can organize themselves.

Why a homeowner cares

It is one of the 12 measures California insurers recognize under the Safer from Wildfires regulation, and it is the community half of the FAIR Plan's community discount. Taking part may qualify you for a discount on the wildfire portion of your policy. The CA FAIR Plan schedule caps at 16.4% off the wildfire portion of a Dwelling Fire policy for all 12 measures combined, and your own carrier sets the actual number.

What it takes, broadly

At a high level: a community risk assessment, a written action plan, ongoing local effort from residents, and an annual renewal to stay in good standing. The requirements change over time, so treat NFPA as the authority rather than anything you read here.

Who does the work

Your neighbors. There is no contractor to hire for this one. It is usually driven by a handful of residents, an HOA, or a local Fire Safe Council, working with your fire agency. That is why this page ends without a list of pros.
