Community measure
Check whether you're in a Fire Risk Reduction Community
Your community appears on the state Fire Risk Reduction Community list.
Your mitigation work may qualify you for wildfire discounts on your premium, but they aren't applied automatically. See How to Get Your Discounts
Only local agencies can hold this one. Cities, counties, special districts and tribal nations apply. A homeowner cannot apply, and neither can a neighborhood. Your job here is to find out whether an agency that covers you is already on the list.
What it is
The Fire Risk Reduction Community list is maintained by the California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection under Public Resources Code 4290.1. It recognizes local agencies in a state responsibility area or a very high fire hazard severity zone that meet the best practices for local fire planning set out in 14 CCR 1268.00 through 1268.04. The Board updates the list every two years.
How to check
Open the Board's official list and look for three things: your city, your county, and your local fire protection district. All three are worth checking, because most designated agencies are special districts rather than cities. If any agency that covers your address appears, that is the one to cite to your carrier.
How big the list is
The 2026 list recognizes 119 local agencies: 42 cities, 12 counties, 64 special districts and one tribal nation. It has grown steadily, from 32 agencies in 2022 to 50 in 2024.
If your agency is not on it
This is something to raise with your city, county or fire district, since they are the only ones who can apply. The application window is currently closed. The next window opens July 1, 2027, for the 2028 list, and informational webinars are expected in early 2027.
Why a homeowner cares
It is one of the 12 measures California insurers recognize, and living in a designated community may qualify you for a discount on the wildfire portion of your policy. The CA FAIR Plan schedule caps at 16.4% off the wildfire portion of a Dwelling Fire policy for all 12 measures combined, and your own carrier sets the actual number.
WildfireList does not award, confer, verify or check this measure. It is granted by the organizations described above, and they are the only source of truth for who holds it.
